Brocade SDN Controller 2.0: New Look and New Accessories

Brocade SDN Controller 2.0: New Look and New Accessories – Brocade Community Forums – 79329

If you’ve been following what we at Brocade are doing with SDN, you know that we have a very strong affiliation with the OpenDaylight Project. All of our SDN engineering efforts are done within the Project, and our distribution is built directly from the Project, meaning that everything within our distribution is from OpenDaylight, with no proprietary extensions.

Since the original 1.0 release, based on Helium, we have done dot releases about every 6 weeks in order to incorporate ODL Service Releases and features which have been sufficiently matured to meet our testing requirements. Our 2.0 release is based on Lithium, and will follow a similar agile schedule of dot releases. 3.0 will be based on Beryllium.

The 2.0 release incorporates Lithium’s clustering enhancements for improved reliability and scalability. Lithium also formally deprecated the Application-Driven SAL and fully replaced it with the Model-Driven SAL. (A good description of the difference between the two Service Abstraction Layers can be found here.) This meant that the OVSDB southbound interface, which was based on the AD-SAL, needed to be rewritten. The teams also did significant enhancements on the northbound side on the OpenStack Neutron ML2 plug-in, which Brocade got certified with the Red Hat OpenStack Juno distribution on behalf of the OpenDaylight Project

Brocade’s new SDN controller | Network World

OpenDaylight “Lithium” distribution includes interoperability and orchestration enhancements.

Brocade this week unveiled its distribution of the latest release of the OpenDaylight open source SDN controller. Brocade’s new SDN Controller 2.0 is based on OpenDaylight’s “Lithium” release, which debuted in July.

Lithium is OpenDaylight’s third SDN controller release and includes enhancements in security and automation, scalability, performance, OpenStack and group-based policy. Brocade specifically cites the improved interoperability and orchestration capabilities of the Lithium distribution, including extensions to the Open vSwitch Database interface and the OpenStack Modular Layer 2 plug-in, which enables cloud providers to use an open software stack to manage their data center infrastructure.

Hillstone Networks Recognized in the Gartner 2015 Magic Quadrant for Unified Threat Management

SUNNYVALE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Hillstone Networks, a leading provider of enterprise network firewall solutions, today announced that the company has maintained, for a second year, its position in the Magic Quadrant for Unified Threat Management by Gartner, Inc*. In its report, Gartner analysts Jeremy D’Hoinne, Adam Hils, Greg Young and Rajpreet Kaur wrote, “Browser-based management, ease of configuration, embedded reporting, and localized software and documentation don’t specifically appeal to large enterprises, but are highly valued by SMBs in this market.”

Hillstone Networks is aware of the diverse needs of large enterprises versus the SMB market. Hillstone’s solutions address and support the guidance proposed by Gartner. As Gartner indicates, “Security buyers should instead evaluate UTM devices based on the controls they will actually use, the performance they will get for those features, and the quality of vendor and channel (and managed services) support that is available.”

Brocade Survey at VMworld 2015: IT Decision Makers Move Towards The New IP Model By Optimizing Data Centers for Cloud, Big Data and Open Source Networking

At VMworld 2015, Brocade implemented a survey focusing on New IP networking, polling 60+ senior IT decision makers attending the show to learn about their strategic business priorities, IT challenges and technology usage.

In the survey, senior IT decision makers shared insight on technology usage within their  data centers, as well as which factors they believe threaten to put a break on IT transformation to more agile cloud-based environments. Results indicate that IT professionals are aggressively adopting many of the technologies which underpin the New IP model of IT transformation – . software defined networking, private cloud, as well as a move to open source solutions.

Topline findings include:

Strategically, 71 % of IT decision makers see a need for IT transformation. However, they also identified common barriers to this transformation as being shortage of funds (25%), cultural conservatism within the IT team (23%) and a lack of strategic consensus at board level (23%). Interestingly, only 16 percent cited ‘uncertainty about which technologies to use’ as being a barrier to transformation.
